Buatsi beats Dimitry Bivol, he is ready at the end of 2021 – Boxing News
Promoter Eddie Hearn believes the undefeated suitor Joshua buatsi is ready to fight for a world title at the end of 2021 against the WBA light heavyweight champion Dimitry Bivol following his devastating fourth round knockout victory over Daniel Blenda Dos Santos (15-1, 8 KOs) last Saturday night at Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.
Matchroom Boxing promoter Hearn says he would like to see undefeated Buatsi (14-0, 12 KOs) take on Bivol (18-0, 11 KOs) at the end of the year, but he’s not sure if his new trainer Virgil Hunter wants to step it up even further.
Buatsi, 28, and Hunter worked their first fight to get last Saturday night against French fighter Dos Santos, whom he blew in four rounds in a strong time reel stoppage.
Hearn believes Hunter will want several fights with Buatsi to freeze before facing the WBA Champion Bivol. Buatsi is about to turn 29 and he could lose precious time.
As we saw in Bivol’s last fight against Craig richards (16-2-1, 9 KOs) on May 1, he looks vulnerable and ready to be beaten.
Richards came close to beating Bivol, losing by a narrow 12-round unanimous decision by the scores 115-114, 115-113, 117-111.
He would have beaten Bivol if he had started fighting aggressively from the start rather than waiting for the Championship rounds to turn on the heat.
âBad KO,â Hearn told iFL TV of Buatsi’s stop on Dos Santos.
“I saw a few people [saying] ‘Dos Santos was not great,’ probably the same kind of people as if Mauricio Lara was knocked out or if [Giovanni] Straffon was knocked out in one round, they would have said he wasn’t good enough either.
“He [Dos Santos] was 15-0; you saw how devastated he was by the defeat. He was clumsy, he was not at Joshua Buatsi’s level, and he was brutally knocked out.
âIt was a good performance from JB [Joshua Buatsi], back from a long layoff, now teaming up with Virgil Hunter. Now we have to engage in a big fight this summer,Hearn said.
Hearn is not saying who 2016 Olympian Buatsi will face this summer for his intensive fight. The point is, Dos Santos has been billed as an intensive fight for Buatsi, and he’s not even ranked in the top 15 by any of the four sanctioning bodies.
As such, Hearn saying that Buatsi will undertake heavy combat may not mean that he is in fact facing a high-caliber fighter. It could be another primary level opponent to give Buatsi more practice and knock the guys out.
With Buatsi’s Olympic experience at his age, he can’t afford to spend too much time fighting guys like Dos Santos, Ryan Ford and Marko Calic if he is to make it to Bivol while he is still champion. WBA.
Buatsi is ranked # 2 WBA, # 3 IBF, # 6 WBC, # 7 WBO. His best bet for a world title would be to face Bivol rather than IBF / WBC champion Artur Beterbiev or WBO champion Joe Smith Jr.
âYeah, he’s fine. You saw him come out, âHearn said when asked if Dos Santos was okay after being arrested by Buatsi. âIt was a brutal knockout. He was devastated because he never lost because he came here to win the fight.
âIt’s going to take a while,â Hearn said of Buatsi teaming up with US coach Virgil Hunter. âJB has always been very technically sound.
âIt’s going to take a while for him to gel with Virgil. I don’t want him to wait too long because I feel like he can win a world title now.
âBut they’re going to take a while to gel together. he is [Buatsi] just to take a step forward now from Dos Santos and a Dimitry Bivol.
âThere are a lot of levels in between, and he has to choose one. Hopefully, as high as you can get because I think he’s good enough to do it.
âWe know we represent Dimitry Bivol as well, and it’s a fight that can be fought,â Hearn said.
Either Buatsi should fight Bivol, or go down to 168 and go after a fight with Canelo Alvarez. Buatsi is small enough to easily win 168, and he would make a lot more money fighting Canelo than Bivol or any of the other champions at 175.
Buatsi’s formidable punching power would go further if he fought at 168, and he wouldn’t have to worry about fighting a dangerous Beterbiev or Joe Smith Jr. There’s no one in super middleweight with their type of power.
“I think that he [Buatsi] can beat it, but obviously they’ll want him to be in the best place possible to beat him. But sometimes you just don’t have to wait too long, âHearn said.
The way Buatsi has looked in his last two fights, he beats Bivol if that match happens now. Bivol has lost something of his game with his inactivity, and he’s never been a great champion, to begin with.
Bivol, 30, lacks punching power and fights too cautiously, making it difficult for him to let go of his hands to conclusively win innings.
Hopefully for Buatsi’s sake he doesn’t get picked up by new coach Virgil Hunter as he can’t afford to wait too long before fighting for a world title.
Bivol was already world champion at 28, and he had a less impressive amateur career than Buatsi.
“I think that he [Buatsi] could do it at the end of the year, “ Hearn said Buatsi was able to face Bivol in 2021. âBut obviously he has a new coach now. He works with Virgil Hunter, âHearn said.
You have to love Hearn’s risk-taking approach to his fighter’s career. Unlike other promoters, Hearn doesn’t bug his fighters or stop them from trying to accomplish great things with their careers.
If Buatsi can beat Bivol to win the WBA title, it will open up bigger fighting opportunities at 175 against match winner Beterbiev against Joe Smith Jr.
âThey’re going to want to have a few fights together, which is great, as long as we step in appropriately for the next fight, and I think they will,â Hearn said of Buatsi.
