Casey O’Neill happy to play the villain – Overtime Heroics
Casey O’Neill says she felt disrespected ahead of her UFC 271 fight against Roxanne Modafferi.
When the fight was first announced, Modafferi confirmed that the fight would be his last. As a result, most of the attention leading up to the event focused on ‘The Happy Warrior’ and her contributions to women’s mixed martial arts.
Despite her undefeated record and status as a big-bet favorite, O’Neill (9-0, 4-0 UFC) was given little notice and made it known at the post-fight press conference on Saturday night.
“I felt like nobody respected me or asked me anything about myself,” O’Neill told reporters at the UFC 271 post-fight press conference. “It was all about retirement. To be honest, the retreat didn’t happen until after the fight, so I felt like it was a bit premature to talk about it.
“I wanted to talk about me and what I was doing and my game plan and everything, and I just felt like I was kind of brushed off, and it was kind of disrespectful, so I was trying just to make my point, to get some respect, too.
Ultimately, O’Neill extended his unbeaten streak to nine with a split decision victory; a move that caused confusion for fight fans and the UFC 271 commentary team considering O’Neill edged Modafferri 230-148 in the 15-minute affair.
Following the announcement, O’Neill was greeted with a series of boos from the crowd. “King” Casey rode with it and accepted the role the crowd had assigned to him.
“If you want me to be the bad guy, then fuck off, I’ll be the fucking bad guy,” O’Neill shouted to the crowd.
O’Neill elaborated on accepting the villain role at UFC 271 amid disrespect from the live crowd.
“Listen, Roxanne is loved by everyone, so of course I’m going to get booed,” O’Neill said. “I’m also not an American and I’m fighting in America to be understood, but I feel like I deserve a little more respect than that. It was a bit of crap, but that’s what it’s. At the end of the day, they buy tickets and they watch me, so you pay me whether you like me or not, so whatever you want to do, I don’t care.
