Title: Bruce Buffer: “Amanda Nunes is Chuck Liddell minus the penis”

Author: Fernando Quiles Jr.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) announcer Bruce Buffer knows how to use words.

The world of mixed martial arts (MMA) and sports in general was in turmoil when Ronda Rousey’s bid for a second round with the women’s bantamweight title was derailed in 48 seconds by champion Amanda Nunes. “The Lioness” was dominant while “Rowdy” showed no improvement since her brutal knockout loss to Holly Holm in November 2015.

Buffer recently appeared on The Pony Hour podcast (via Bloody Elbow) and spoke about Nunes’ first successful title defense. Despite Rousey’s performance, Buffer believes she took the fight very seriously:

“I thought (Rousey) was focused, she just got her ass done. She arrived in Vegas the previous Monday or Friday, weighing 135 pounds, instead of arriving with 150 or whatever, and was expected to lose 15 pounds in 5 days. It’s concentrated! She came to kill him.

With the punching power of Nunes, Buffer compared the 135-pound queen to UFC Hall of Fame Chuck Liddell. There is, however, a significant difference.

“In the case of Amanda Nunes, who looks like Chuck Liddell with a clitoris. It’s like – and without the penis – she’s a woman who can go back and forth, not hitting you and hitting you in the face, she hitting you in the head. She’ll probably be holding this belt for a long time.

Many provided their theories as to why Rousey didn’t improve in the sport. Some blame her coaches while others believe she was overrated to begin with. Buffer offered his take on what went wrong.

“In Holly’s case, she was told she was invincible. Wrong! “Buffer exclaimed.” No one is invincible. Okay? She entered that next fight, with no visible improvement in the 48 seconds we saw. Flat feet, no head movement, entering in a devastating attacker to fight his battle Bad judgment!

History teaches us to expect the unexpected in mixed martial arts, especially at the highest levels. The nine men and women currently in possession of the Bellator MMA Gold will enter their respective 2022 campaigns with a sense of anticipation. Some will be rewarded with extended title reigns while others will experience very public drops from grace. This is the nature of the beast in a sport where chaos and uproar lurk around every corner. Need proof? Four of the nine undisputed championships have changed hands at least once in 2021. Who will be the last men and women standing when the calendar moves to 2023? A look at the crystal ball:

Moldavsky tries to clinch fame from the get-go, as he challenges Ryan Bader to headliner Bellator 273 on Jan. 29 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. There, the two men will unify the heavyweight crown of the promotion. At just 29, Moldavsky entered the cage on a career-best six-game winning streak that now spans more than five years. Fedor Protégé Emelianenko won the interim championship at Bellator 261, where he claimed a five-round unanimous decision over Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Timothy Johnson on June 25.

Long considered a future champion, Anderson has only one obstacle to overcome. The winner of Season 19 of “The Ultimate Fighter” will face reigning 205-pound defending champion Vadim Nemkov in the Bellator light heavyweight grand prix final in the first half of 2022. To the winner the undisputed light heavyweight championship returns. Anderson has won three straight victories since joining the Bellator roster as a big-price free agent just over a year ago. He last fought on October 16, when he knocked out the aforementioned Bader just 51 seconds away from their Grand Prix semi-final at the Bellator 268.

Mousasi is perhaps Bellator’s most complete payroll fighter, regardless of weight. “The Dreamcatcher” will put his middleweight championship on the line when it entertains Team USA’s unbeaten Austin Vanderford at the Bellator 275 main event on February 25 in Dublin. Mousasi, 36, has won 11 of his last 12 fights, a controversial majority decision against Rafael Lovato Jr. in June 2019, his only misstep. He last competed at the Bellator 264, where he beat John Salter with punches in the third round of their August 13 meeting.

The record speaks for itself: 26-0. After rising to the top of the Bellator welterweight division, the undefeated Amosov must now prove he can stay there. The Ukrainian bully ended his 170-pound championship run on June 11, when he took a five-round unanimous decision from Douglas Lima under the Bellator 260 marquee. Wins over Gerald Harris, Erick Silva, David Rickels, Ed Ruth, Mark Lemminger and Logan Storley preceded his title win over Lima. Although not yet official, Amosov plans to defend his welterweight crown against Michael Page in London in the second quarter of 2022.

Nurmagomedov looks like the next potential star in Russia’s pipeline at the American Kickboxing Academy. The 23-year-old leading prospect got off to a perfect 14-0 start, with 12 of his wins via knockout, technical knockout or submission. Nurmagomedov last fought on October 23, when he submitted Patrik Pietila with a strangulation at 4:06 am in the first round of their clash with the Bellator 269. Although he does not yet have a clear path to the Reigning lightweight title holder Patricky Freire, he’s climbed into the Top 5 and could go faster than expected with one or two more impressive performances. The situation remains fluid in a division where the champion seems more vulnerable than most.

Otherworldly talents like McKee only show up once in a while. The Long Beach, Calif., Native improved to 18-0 in his only appearance in 2021 – a star submission from Patricio Freire in the main event of the Bellator 263 which brought with him the undisputed weight championship. feathers on July 31. McKee had the Brazilian badly injured with a header before closing the distance and briefly smother him unconscious with a 1:57 guillotine in the first round. A rematch with “Pitbull” numbers to be on the role of McKee as soon as possible, with challengers like Adam Borics and Mads Burnell also in the queue. “The Mercenary” will be favored in any fight at 145 pounds for the foreseeable future.

Pettis has as much momentum as any Bellator champion right now. The current bantamweight title holder was set to be dethroned on December 3 and then created the ‘Knockout of the Year’ when he equalized Kyoji Horiguchi with a perfectly synchronized backfist in the fourth round of their lead. Bellator 272. This might not be the last time the two men face each other inside the cage. Nonetheless, Pettis, at the age of 28, appears to be a fully trained mixed martial artist with few holes to tap. Could Roufusport teammate Raufeon Stots be considered the next No.1 competitor at 135 pounds?

Women’s Featherweight: Cris Cyborg

There were concerns that Cyborg’s knockout loss to Amanda Nunes in December 2018 could mark the end of her historic 145-pound reign of domination. Bad luck for the women who populate the Bellator featherweight division. Cyborg has since pieced together a five-game winning streak, with the last four of those wins coming in the promotion led by Scott Coker. While that might not represent a complete rebirth, Justino certainly looks like his old self again. She closed her 2021 campaign in style on November 12, when she attacked Sinead Kavanagh with punches in the first round of their Bellator 271 main event and retained the women’s featherweight championship.

Velasquez reached the top of the flyweight just over a year ago, when she upset Ilima-Lei Macfarlane in a five-round unanimous decision and walked away with championship gold strapped to her waist . Team undefeated product Nogueira played a lightweight program in 2021, successfully defending the 125-pound title in a split verdict against Denise Kielholtz in headlining at Bellator 262 on July 16. The fight was much more competitive than expected, as Velasquez struggled to cope with the Dutch judoka’s sustained attack on her legs and body. Despite everything, she persevered. Macfarlane, Kielholtz, Liz Carmouche and Kana Watanabe appear to be Velasquez’s most pressing threats going forward.

When the New Year arrives, fitness is often on our minds. New research from a sports nutrition brand, Myprotein, ranked this year’s trends to try, and also reflected on trends that lost momentum in 2021.

In 2022, according to new research from Myprotein, we can expect increasing interest in functional fitness, social exercise, and intuitive eating ideas; and the growing interest in fitness styles like boxing, mixed martial arts, ultimate frisbee, among others.

Functional fitness, social exercise, and intuitive eating are some of the fitness ideas likely to generate interest in 2022, according to new research from Myprotein.

The brand has teamed up with personal trainer Tom Hall to make some predictions on what fitness trends we might see in 2022. Here’s what Tom had to say:

1. Financial year

“People love to see people – interaction is so precious, even if we don’t always think it is! While people may enjoy being part of a gym with all the equipment they could possibly need, they also like to chat and be social, as well as having other people around to motivate them.

“So if all goes, we expect a return to activities in person, as well as in a group, and maybe a little dust is settling on those dumbbells at home!” “

2. Cross-training and functional fitness

“The world is less and less oriented towards traditional strength training and most coaches are now making more functional training plans. Working out in functional fitness can also help achieve a number of different goals, whether you’re looking to build muscle, lose weight, or just maintain a good level of strength and fitness.

3. Data-driven training plans

“Rather than just using technology to track our steps or monitor our heart rate, we’re starting to see comprehensive training plans built around biometric data. And as technology continues to advance, we’ll be able to include more and more data in our plans – we might even start to get things like speed and power with our weightlifting. “

4. Even more vegan

“Plant-based diets can still be powerful sources of nutrition and energy, and with enough planning and structure for your meals, they can be high enough in protein for those looking to gain weight. You now have a lot more variety, with vegan protein bars and snacks, plus tons of plant-based protein powders. The quality is improving more and more, so expect to see more in the coming year. “

5. Intuitive eating

“People have a more holistic view of their physical and mental health, and intuitive eating can play an important role in this regard. By thinking more about your diet, trying to enjoy food, rather than just thinking about numbers and macros, instead focusing on behaviors and establishing positive relationships with food and your diet in general.

The most and least popular fitness trends from 2021

In addition to looking to the future, Myprotein also took a look at the past 12 months, using Google search data to highlight the most and least popular fitness trends in the United States.

In a sometimes frustrating year, Americans have turned to a variety of combat sports in an attempt to stay in shape – and release some tension while they’re at it! Boxing came out on top, with a whopping 139% increase in searches. Mixed martial arts saw 102% search volume, with kickboxing (+ 48%) and karate (+ 29%) also getting a boost.

After the postponed matches finally took place, 2021 saw an increase in Olympic-inspired workouts, including badminton (+ 70%), athletics (+ 47%), rowing (+ 43%), swimming (+ 33%) and tennis (+ 13%). And thanks to the viral trend TikTok, we also saw a spike in interest in the hula hoop, with searches increasing by 70%.

Undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor praised Claressa Shields on her MMA journey, but believes the unified middleweight defending champion should now focus solely on her boxing career.

Shields, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and the only boxer in history to simultaneously hold all four major world titles in two weight classes, tested the waters of mixed martial arts as part of the PFL’s growing promotion in 2021. Having built a spotless 11. -0 record in the square circle, “T-Rex” sought to create similar success in the cage.

This past June, Shields got off to a winning start in his new sport, recovering from two lost innings to TKO Brittney Elkin in his third debut. But while she was able to overcome her shortcomings on the floor in her first appearance, the 26-year-old was unable to do the same on her second outing.

In the PFL final in October, Shields suffered his first professional loss in combat sports. She fell on the wrong side of a split decision against Abigail Montes after failing to prevent her opponent’s strikeouts and keep the fight on its feet.

Taylor gives his opinion on Shields’ two-sports business

Despite his first setback, most agreed that the transition from boxing to MMA was always going to be difficult, and figures like UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya praised Shields for trying his hand at a new sport. It also appears the journey is far from over for “T-Rex,” who hopes to return to the cage for his third appearance in 2022.

But one of her fellow pound-for-pound boxing stars, Katie Taylor, thinks a return to MMA wouldn’t be wise. Speaking during an appearance on MMA time, the Irish champion credited Shields with facing the cross-challenger. However, “KT” believes she should now rationalize all of her efforts for her career in the ring.

“I certainly didn’t expect (Shields to fight in MMA). But I thought it was a fantastic challenge for her because boxing and MMA are two completely different sports. It’s very, very difficult for anyone in boxing to cross because obviously we don’t have a floor game.

“If someone knocked me down, for example, that would be a huge problem for me. I think obviously you might still have a shot at hitting, but that’s a priority – it’s very, very hard to stand. So I think it was an admirable challenge for her to take on. But I would like her to focus on boxing now.

Taylor’s plea for Shields to quit his MMA career in the past, for now at least, precedes what appears to be a busy year in boxing for “GWOAT”.

Shields was originally scheduled to return to the sport to defend his middleweight belts against Slovenian Ema Kozin later this month. However, with the British Boxing Board of Control announcing the suspension of sport in the UK due to COVID-19, the status of this clash, scheduled for Cardiff, Wales, is uncertain.

Beyond that, Shields looks set for an undisputed middleweight showdown with England’s Savannah Marshall later this year. With exciting boxing challenges ahead of her, Taylor believes her immediate future lies better in the square circle and nowhere else.

“There are a lot of big fights going on for her,” Taylor said. “The likes of Savannah Marshall, who is a fantastic world champion fighter, and I think Savannah actually beat her as an amateur fighter, so it’s a huge, huge, huge fight for them. It’s probably one of the biggest fights in women’s boxing. (h / t boxing scene)

Do you agree with Katie Taylor? Should Claressa Shields focus on her in-ring career?

It seems that Boxing is over for Jacques Paul. After hitting a 5-0-0 record, he wants to continue to be linked in combat but not in a ring. In fact, he started a revolution on Twitter to take the first step towards his new goal, and his first target was UFC President, Dana White.

The problem child has already written a few chapters of his fight history with Mixed martial arts as co-stars. His third professional boxing clash was against Ben askren, a former UFC warrior. The result was a quick first round victory for the Youtuber as well.

Then his fourth and fifth fights were with Tyron woodley, one of the UFC’s greatest welterweight champions. In the first fight, Jake Paul suffered to win by split decision, but, in the second, his power appeared and made T-Wood fall asleep in turn 6. Could it have the same efficiency in an octagon?

Jake Paul’s request to Dana White to move on to the UFC

On Twitter, where he has 4 million followers, The problem child publicly offered Dana White to retire from boxing to jump into the UFC Octagon, but first he asked White to meet some economic demands that could improve working conditions for mixed martial artists .

Increase the minimum wage for fighters per fight to $ 50,000 (now $ 12,000); guarantee UFC fighters 50% of annual UFC income ($ 1 billion in 2021); providing long-term health care for all fighters (you said brain damage was part of the gig … imagine the NFL said so. Many UFC alumni have publicly stated that they suffered from brain damage.Paul said on Twitter.

Additionally, Jake Paul has set a deadline for Dana White to accept applications. Having received a positive response, Paul would agree to officially join the UFC and, moreover, would agree to fight the welterweight contender. Jorge masvidal.

Dana White’s reaction to Jake Paul’s tweet

UFC President received the problem Childmessage from on social media, and he didn’t wait long to respond. Unfortunately for Jake Paul, it looks like the “negotiation” he proposed to get into the UFC world didn’t just start out the right way – he received a public challenge as well.

Jake, you never answered the challenge. You have publicly stated that I use cocaine: I don’t. So I told you, you could randomly test me for the next 10 years. I believe you are a cheater, and I believe you are using steroids. So I want to randomly test you for steroids for the next 2 years,“replied White.

Regarding Paul’s requests, Dana replied: “No one on earth thinks you really wrote this: you are too stupid. Your manager was an accountant for me and I think he’s a bastard. But if you think you can do better than us, then knock yourself out, start your own business. It is easy to do. You need to focus on your business. You cannot sell Pay Per Views. You call Jorge Masvidal because he’s a Pay Per View superstar. Diaz, McGregor, Tyson: they’re all superstars, you’re not. Do whatever you want to do.

According to a company audit, Mikkeller suffered a total loss of revenue of approximately $ 4 million between 2019 and 2020. The report states that last year’s losses were “primarily the result of COVID-19 restrictions, lockdown and the general uncertainty around the world, strongly affecting our retail sales as well as wholesaling to bars and restaurants on site.

Borsen reported that Mikkeller founder Mikkel Borg Bjergsø transferred part of the company’s ownership to Orkila following the most recent transaction. However, Mikkeller CEO Kenneth Madsen said via email that the transaction did not result in any change in current ownership or controlling interests. Madsen says the deal with Orkila is “a fundamental step in securing funding for 2022”.

Madsen declined Good Beer Hunting’s request for a phone interview and did not respond to specific questions about the transaction posed to him by email. Orkila Capital also did not respond to a request for an interview.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT

What this multi-million dollar brew from Orkila means to Mikkeller – a global brewing company with dozens of locations around the world – is made less clear by the company’s ownership structure. In a 2018 analysis, Good Beer Hunting found that dozens of different companies had been formed over the years, each with varying degrees of ownership in different bars or businesses under the Mikkeller banner. This extensive network is likely necessary given the different owners of the company, the partnership structures and the many countries in which it operates. At the time, Bjergsø describe the number of companies he owns in the world is “over 25”.

The emphasis on experiential entertainment as well as alcohol companies creates potential synergies for Orkila if she can leverage both to serve each other. Orkila already has invested an undisclosed amount in Swedish beer company Omnipollo and its website states that it operates in the media, entertainment and consumer sectors with investments in event companies such as:

  • Ironman Group, producer of Ironman competitions

  • Bellator, a mixed martial arts promotions and tournaments company

  • Down the Drain, a Scandinavian independent music festival and promotion platform.

In the 2020 audit, Mikkeller management noted “a temporary slowdown in wholesale revenues overall” as the company evolves its distribution network into “longer-term sustainable business partnerships.” The company also relies on its annual Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen for its revenue and branding, an event that has come under serious pressure this year after dozens of breweries withdrawn from the Oktoberfest by invitation as opposed to the company’s handling of workplace complaints.

With its wholesale business in transition and on-site operations still in shock due to COVID, external partnerships with events such as those in which Orkila is already investing could provide a much needed source of financial income. Whether at a sports competition or a music festival, there is now an increased direct link, via Orkila, between events and beer.

The association with Mikkeller, however, has proven to be a handicap over the past year. The company faces intense public scrutiny for the damaging working conditions, and in November, his commercial partnership for a beer brand and a pair of collaborative breweries with 3 dissolved Floyds Brewing.

Orkilla’s increased investment, on the contrary, shows some confidence in the beer brand’s business prospects. However, venture capital is rarely a long-term investment, and Orkila may be just looking to bring Mikkeller back to profitability so that he can generate his return on his investment. Even after a scorching year for the Mikkeller brand, the two sides made it clear to hold on and found common ground to the tune of $ 6 million.

It is unusual in beer to reach a second investment stage between private equity and the brewery.

  • In 2015, Dogfish Head sold 15% to LNK Partners, then sold entirely to Boston Beer in 2019.

  • SweetWater sold an undisclosed minority stake to TSG Consumer Partners in 2014 before its sale to Aphria, Inc. (now Tilray, Inc.) in 2020.

  • Even Three Weavers came out of a deal with CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective before deepening their financial ties.

The uniqueness of Orkila and Mikkeller doubling their relationship stands out in this regard. But the records shed light on the connection between Orkila’s new investments and holdings and Mikkeller’s corporate structure. Here is what the Danish Trade Records Database indicates as of December 30, 2021:

  • There has been no change of owner for Mikkeller ApS, Mikkeller’s parent company, since March 2020, when Jesse Michael du Bey, Orkila’s managing partner, took a stake.

  • Mikkeller ApS is owned by Craft brewery holding ApS, a holding company which is itself legally owned by BJERGSØ HOLDING ApS. BJERGSØ HOLDING ApS lists its secondary objective as: “Leasing of intellectual and similar property rights, other than works protected by copyright”, an objective in accordance with the brand license and franchise type structure Mikkeller has set up its bars, bottle shops and breweries across the world.

BJERGSØ HOLDING ApS is where the changes of ownership related to Orkila occurred:

  • Records show that the Copenhagen-based company has a new partial owner as of December 17, 2021: Mikkeller InvestCo II LLC, which is registered at the same New York address as Orkila Capital.

  • According to these documents, US-based entities called Mikkeller InvestCo LLC and Mikkeller InvestCo Trust III (which also shares a New York address with Orkila Capital) are also partial owners. Collectively, they own 30-45% (some ownership shares are listed as percentage ranges) of BJERGSØ HOLDING ApS.

  • Mikkeller InvestCo LLC is registered at an address in Dover, Delaware that is not associated with Orkila Capital. (Delaware laws make it easier to incorporate businesses there. More than half of all U.S. publicly listed companies are incorporated in the state, making Delaware to LLCs what Las Vegas is to weddings.) The address in Dover, however, is associated with entities named in the Leak at sea investigation, a project of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which subsequently published data revealed by the Panama Papers. While this association is not evidence of illegality or wrongdoing, it does testify to the complicated nature of Mikkeller’s ownership structure and Orkila’s investment.

  • This listing indicates that the address was linked to a company called Yili Carborundum USA Inc., which the Securities and Exchange Commission lists as owned by Master Silicon Carbide Industries, Inc., which is in the semiconductor industry and appears to have ceased trading in 2012.

Neither Mikkeller nor Orkila responded to requests for an interview, which is unclear how the Dover address became linked to both Mikkeller’s investors and offshore business activities.

Orkila, through Managing Partner Jesse du Bey, has also owned the Mikkeller Brewery in San Diego since 2020. This brewery is owned by Stella Polly, Inc., a company incorporated in Delaware on May 13, 2015 and registered on August 18, 2015. doing business in California. Danish records show that du Bey is a “beneficial owner” of Stellapolly ApS craft beer from March 2020. There, and in the files of over a dozen other holding companies related to Mikkeller’s bars and brasseries du Bey is registered as being based in Germany.

Multiple owners and subsidiaries are not an uncommon arrangement among global companies, but with du Bey and his company becoming more involved in Mikkeller’s operations, it expands the already vast network of people and businesses already in place when ‘it’s about running this business.

Such interdependent entities make it nearly impossible to say what Orkila’s cash injection means in terms of Mikkeller’s future direction and who decides the future of the business. One thing is clear: the investments that Orkila has made in Mikkeller are far from “a basic gesture”.

Students of the prolific Port Stephens martial arts exponent and 8th Dan Grandmaster Robert Frost continue to enjoy success at representative levels.

Frost, who runs a number of Toogee Martial Arts Centers across the harbor and is based in Raymond Terrace, has been training boys and girls of all ages and skill levels for over 40 years.

Two of his most recent successes are Port Stephens teens Zarleigh Went and Jayme Zikman at the Australian Mixed Martial Arts Titles held in Sydney earlier this month.

Jayme, of Lemon Tree Passage, is a 15-year-old student at Hunter River High and team captain. She returned home with her third medal at the national championships – this time in the extreme demonstration category.

Jayme is coached by her father Tim Zikman at the Mallabula club. “Jayme has been training since the age of nine and aims to compete in more competitions in 2022,” he said.

Zarleigh, 14, a ninth grade student at Irrawang High School, won two titles: the Australian Continuous Sparring Champion and the Australian Points Sparring Champion titles in the 13-15 age group.

Zarleigh, who trains at club Raymond Terrace, also placed third in the full contact sparring event, which was open to all skill levels, including black belts.

She is late in the sport, having only started kickboxing training around 18 months ago and taekwondo since the start of this year.

“Just two weeks ago, she competed in state titles and earned the state champion title in full contact sparring, where she competed at four levels – full contact, point contact, sparring with points and free sparring. It’s an incredible achievement as this time last year, she hadn’t even thought about competing, “said Lue Fagan, community liaison officer at Irrawang High.

“What else can we say besides congratulations from the whole community at Irrawang High School.”

Zarleigh is now eligible to compete with the Australian squad, with a number of overseas competitions on the horizon.

Toogee had four other participants – Fred (who finished second), Naiya, Zanda and Bella – who all excelled at their events. “The sportsmanship that everyone showed was incredible and they made the club proud,” said Robert.

Frost started the Toogee Taekwondo Club in the 1990s and has opened centers throughout the region. At its peak, the club held classes for up to 500 students. Today, Toogee runs around 25 classes with hundreds of students ranging in age from three to 83.

In addition to taekwondo, several of its centers offer classes in other styles of gymnastics, cardio, and strength training with certified instructors.

Dan Bongino, one of America’s most popular conservative commentators, lives in the seaside town of Stuart, Florida, less than an hour from Mar-a-Lago, where his friend Donald Trump is battling retirement. forced. Every weekday from noon to three – the coveted time slot once owned by the late Rush Limbaugh – “The Dan Bongino Show” is broadcast live across the United States, beginning with the voice of a presenter on the sound of hard-rock guitars: “From the NYPD to the Secret Service behind the mic, leading the fight to the radical left and the putrid swamp.”

One day this fall, minutes before Bongino went on the air, he learned that a drama was unfolding that offered prime material: In New York City, a live interview with Vice President Kamala Harris had was interrupted because two hosts of “The View” tested positive for the groundbreaking cases of COVID-19. Bongino, who protests against the compulsory vaccines and calls the masks “layers for the face”, announced to his audience: “None of them seem to work on ‘The View’. “But,” he said pointedly, “he was not jubilant -” unlike the mad leftists, who wish death on me and on everyone else in the world. COVID, because they are legitimately crazy satanic demons.

Bongino draws an estimated 8.5 million radio listeners per week, making it America’s fourth-most-listened host, ahead of Mark Levin, Glenn Beck and other big names, according to speakers magazine, which covers the industry. Although he only started broadcasting after three unsuccessful congressional nominations, he now runs a Fox News show on Saturday nights, a podcast that has ranked # 1 on iTunes, and a website that repackages stories. in some of the most frequented articles. on social networks. In recent months, according to data from Facebook, his page has garnered more engagement than those of the Time, Washington To post, and the the Wall Street newspaper combined.

Audiovisual history is full of characters who play a combative character on the air but abandon the pose when they leave the studio. Bongino is not among them. “For the fifteen thousandth time, if you want to wear a mask, knock yourself out, papa-o,” he told me recently, after finishing his recording for the day. “It doesn’t matter. You do. That’s what pisses me off: if you dare say something like, ‘Hey, are these things really working?’ People say, ‘What the hell? You madman, heretic, son of a bitch of the flat earth! Kill that guy! “”

Bongino records at a desk adorned with a boxing bell, judge’s hammer and stone nameplate carved with the message “Be strong as a rock !!!” His aesthetic, visually and editorially, testifies to his political moment. Limbaugh, the dominant Conservative expert for three decades, was a dedicated housekeeper, with a physique that celebrated sybaritic contentment. Forty-seven-year-old Bongino is six feet tall and muscular, with a martial cut and goatee. Like other members of his cohort, including podcaster Joe Rogan and Infowars host Alex Jones, he favors a wardrobe of tight-fitting t-shirts. He displays a tattoo on his left bicep, and he often diffuses with a facial expression that resembles the angry emoji. Asked by a fan what he would do if he wasn’t a political commentator, Bongino replied that he would participate in mixed martial arts.

After exhausting Kamala Harris’s riff, Bongino turned to his main interest of the day: the “rigged” elections. For years, he has claimed that “deep state” plotters and foreign entities sought to sabotage Trump in 2016, infiltrating his campaign and leaking allegations about his relationship with Russia. (He turned that theory into a book, “Spygate,” one of four quickly generated volumes that bore Bongino’s name during Trump’s presidency.) These days, his story has broadened to include the president. Joe Biden – a “shameful, disgusting and grotesque bag of bones” – along with his son Hunter. “The FBI and CIA, members of it, have unquestionably attempted to rig the 2016 and 2020 elections,” said Bongino to his audience. In the latter, he explained, “they didn’t broadcast bad information about anyone – they hid information about Joe Biden and his corrupt son.”

Cartoon by Farley Katz

In Bongino’s world, it doesn’t matter that Trump’s allegations of widespread fraud were dismissed by his own senior officials in the Justice and Homeland Security departments, as well as federal and state judges. To the true believer, the lack of solid evidence simply confirms how well the rig was hidden. In the study of conspiracy theories (a description Bongino rejects), this is called “self-sealing”: the theory fixes the holes in its own logic. “A corrupt intelligence community, in conjunction with corrupt media, is going to devour this country like a cancer from within,” Bongino told his audience as he prepared a take-out. “That’s why I really hope Donald Trump shows up in 2024,” he said. “He’s the best candidate to clean the house. Because if we don’t clean the house, the Republic is gone.

Spend several months immersed in American talk radios and you will come away feeling that the violence of January 6 was not the end of something but the beginning. A year after Trump supporters besieged the U.S. Capitol, some of its most influential champions are laying the groundwork for his return, and they dominate a media field that attracts little attention from their opponents. As liberals argue over Facebook’s algorithm and reflect on TikTok’s disruptive influence, radio remains a colossus; for every hour that Americans listened to podcasts in 2021, they listened to six and a half hours of AM / FM radio, according to Edison Research, a market research and polling company. Talk radio has often provided more reliable indications of the political future than think tanks and elected officials. In 2007, even as Republican leaders George W. Bush and John McCain tried to make themselves known as immigration reformers, Limbaugh advocated laws that would deny immigrants access to government services and require them to speak English. .

Seven in ten Republicans want Trump to run again, according to a recent Politico and Morning Consult poll. Senior Party leaders perpetuate its fraudulent claims about the 2020 elections; in an interview with Fox News, Rep. Steve Scalise, House No. 2 Republican, refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of the result. Trump’s associates risked jail time in order to thwart a congressional investigation into the attempt to cancel the vote. At the state level, an unprecedented effort sidelines Trump’s opponents and rewrites laws to give supporters control of the election administration. On the balkanized airwaves of the United States, his supporters use their platforms to spread disinformation, undermine faith in governance, and inflame his supporters.

No one in the American media has benefited from the Trump era and its aftermath as much as Bongino. Since 2015, it has grown from a podcast fledgling in its basement to an audience of millions. Pete Hegseth, another Fox News host who served in the National Guard, told me, “I carried a rifle in the military, and now I can serve in information warfare. Bongino, he added, “is one of our generals.” This vision of the cultural struggle is preponderant in Trumpworld. Alex Jones, who named his conspiratorial media brand Infowars, uses the motto “There is a war for your mind!” “

Trump has fostered a crop of broadcasters who owe their power to him, men like Sebastian Gorka, the former White House aide, and Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA. Brian Rosenwald, author of the story “Talk Radio’s America,” noted the triumph of ideology over experience. “Bongino is for people who believe in Trump’s press releases, who see the world falling apart and Biden as a rabid socialist,” he told me. Rosenwald compares Bongino’s rise to that of Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who reached Congress in 2021, though she has expressed belief in a “global Satan-worshiping pedophile cabal” and other delusions associated with it. QAnon. “At the time, Marjorie Taylor Greene would have been sent to the worst committees, buried by management,” he said. “But the old rules for how you gain stature are out of the way.”

Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters, a nonprofit group that tracks and critiques the conservative press, said the field is changing for the first time since the ’90s, when Limbaugh, Fox News and blogger Matt Drudge established their domination. “They created the guidelines that people have followed for decades,” Carusone said. But Limbaugh is gone, and Drudge and Fox face more radical competition. “The new information ecosystem is taking shape over the next two years, and whatever comes out of it will pave the way for years to come.”

In the long run, Bongino’s most significant impact may not come from what he says on his shows. “My goal is for my content to be the least interesting thing I have done,” he told me. He used his money and influence to favor tech startups, such as Parler, Rumble, and AlignPay, which favor right-wing views. These companies are meant to resist traditional pressure campaigns, including advertising boycotts like the one Media Matters instigated in 2019, based on old radio interviews in which Fox host Tucker Carlson described women as ” extremely primitive ”and the Iraqis as“ apes ”. Carusone said, “What scares me about Bongino is that this guy could end up owning or controlling or directly building the infrastructure that operationalizes a whole range of extremisms.” He continued, “There were lines. You could say, “OK, PayPal, don’t let the January 6 folks recruit money to pay for the buses.” This new alternative infrastructure is not going to stop that. If another uprising is organized online, he said, “there will be a spike effect. Everyone will say, “How did this happen? Well it is summer event.”

After Bongino’s monologue on the intelligence community, he moved on to another case of skepticism about the US election. In Arizona, he informed his audience that a “forensic audit,” launched by Trump supporters who were certain his loss there was fraudulent, had delivered bad news: Biden received even more votes than ‘he had initially counted none. Bongino urged his listeners to be skeptical. “The numbers may be correct, but who was behind the numbers? ” He asked.

Encouraging this way of thinking is a reliable business bet; suspicion is an appetite which is never completely sated. And, as any gun shop owner knows, some businesses thrive when customers feel vulnerable. “The Liberals are the Man,” Bongino told his audience in August. “They run big companies. They run YouTube. They run Facebook. They run the government. We are the real misfits, we are the real rebels now.
