Chris Eubank Jr beat Wanik Awdijan, forcing him to withdraw after five rounds on Saturday night at Newcastle and say his ribs were shattered by punches to the body.

Eubank Jr had punished his rival with muffled punches when Awdijan failed to emerge for the sixth round.

The victory sets Eubank Jr for the major fight he targeted in December en route to a world championship opportunity.

Eubank Jr had to wait a nerve-racking fortnight for this comeback fight, after two opponents pulled out of the fight within days, and Awdijan asked him some first questions with his awkward left-handed position.

Eubank Jr was forced to nod to admit that Awdijan caught him in the fourth round with a strong left hand.

But he turned up the heat and responded with punches to the body and then a left hook.

The fifth round was Eubank Jr’s best so far – he hit home a succession of punches in the ribs, and Awdijan was visibly breathing hard and backing away.

Awdijan, sitting on his stool after the fifth, shook his head and called the referee to signify his withdrawal.
