Claressa Shields: I bring my ferocity and my booty

LA VEGAS (January 25, 2022) – The only undisputed two-division world champion in boxing, Claressa “GWOAT” Shieldsheld a media workout in Las Vegas on Tuesday as she showed off her skills ahead of her defense of the WBC/WBA/IBF world middleweight championship against the No. 1-ranked challenger Ema Kozine which will take place on Saturday, February 5 live on pay-per-view in the United States and Canada.

Shields has moved her training camp to Las Vegas as she prepares for the altitude she will experience stepping into the ring at Motorpoint Arena Cardiff in Wales for her UK pro debut. Four-fight PPV card starts at 3pm ET / 12pm PT and features star British middleweights Chris Eubank Jr. and Liam Williams meeting in the main event.

Guided by Salita Promotions, Shields signed a lucrative multi-fight deal with promoter Boxxer and broadcaster SKY Sports in the UK that set her on the path to a super fight showdown with WBO middleweight champion Savannah. Marshall in 2022.

Shields met the media on Tuesday at Mayweather Boxing Clubwhere she leads training in Las Vegas, and discussed adding a co-trainer Gerald Tucker to his team and more. Here’s what Shields and his promoter Dmitriy Salita had to say:

CLARESSA SHIELDS

Adding co-trainer Gerald Tucker to his team, joining longtime trainer John David Jackson:

“I just wanted new eyes in my camp. I always wanted two different coaches with two different styles in my corner. He fits perfectly into my team.

“Gerald works with Floyd Mayweather, so he brings a different type of boxing conditioning. He makes the pads differently than I’ve ever made them. We can add some things and my coaches are totally in sync.

On a potential confrontation with Savannah Marshall:

“I never focused on Savannah. She focused on me. If you watch her interviews, she always talks about Claressa Shields. I’m really happy that the fight with her is getting closer. They will see why I am 12 times champion. There’s just a huge difference in what we can do as fighters.

On her UK debut as a professional (Shields won gold at the 2012 Olympics in London):

“I feel like I’m going back to my old stomping ground. I’m excited to play and show everyone in the UK how I’ve improved as a fighter. When they saw me at the Olympics, I was still a teenager.

“I don’t think they’ve seen my boxing style there yet. I bring my ferocity and my swag. I’ll show them why I’m pound for pound. They should all come out and watch this fight, because I’m building all kinds of new strengths and powers.

On the transition from MMA training camps to boxing:

“The mental part is the most important thing for me. I really love learning MMA so when I come back to boxing I have to come back knowing that I just have my left hand and my right hand. My preference is always for boxing training. I’m still getting better and learning more, even with everything I’ve accomplished in boxing so far.

“Claressa takes this fight very seriously and leaves no stone unturned in her preparations. From his work at the gym to the addition of Gerald Tucker to his already excellent corner, which includes one of the best coaches in the sport in John David Jackson, I truly think this is one of the best training camps in his career.

“I’m looking forward to a breakthrough performance against the undefeated and very capable Ema Kozin on Saturday February 5th. All of that hard work is en route to the biggest fight in women’s boxing history against Savannah Marshall.”
