Colby Covington ‘not good’ after alleged street attack on Jorge Masvidal, says Chael Sonnen

Colby Covington is apparently off track after he was allegedly attacked by Jorge Masvidal outside a steakhouse in Florida.

The alleged incident allegedly took place last Monday evening outside the Papi Steak restaurant on the beach in Miami.

The former interim cfu The welterweight champion, 33, had been out for a meal with Canadian YouTube group The Nelk Boys when the confrontation allegedly took place.

It came weeks after the best friends-turned-bitter rivals met in the main event of UFC 273 in Las Vegas, where Covington raised his hand thanks to a unanimous decision verdict.

The pair had exchanged heated words in the build-up to the fight, as years of hatred finally culminated in coming face-to-face in the octagon.

Retirement mma fighter Chael Sonnen – who has a good relationship with Covington – gave an update on his fellow American’s condition after the alleged attack.

The ESPN Expert said via Twitter video“Not good. Guys keep asking how is Colby?

“I’m going to be very light on the details; it’s not my story to tell.

“Do you want an answer? Here is your answer – not good.

Masvidal, 37, was recently spotted at iKON Fighting Championship 2 at the Miami Airport Convention Center on March 18.

He was charged with aggravated assault and criminal mischief, the Miami Beach Police Department said.

Masvidal was then released on Monday night after posting $15,000 (£11,300) bail.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges while calling it ‘a common fighter with another athlete’.

Former two-weight UFC champ turned pundit Daniel Cormier – a longtime colleague of Sonnen – also opened up about the recent allegations.

Speaking during a recent appearance on ESPN’s ‘DC & RC’, he said: ‘Colby Covington is not a street guy.

“Like, I’m going to tell you today, Colby Covington is not a street guy.

“Colby Covington is a guy who likes to talk and fight.

“The shtick may have crossed the line and now it’s put him in a situation that he’s not really equipped for.

“That’s why he didn’t have anyone in place with him to make sure he didn’t cross a line.

“But because I know who I am, I always made sure someone was in that place with me to make sure I didn’t cross the line, to keep me safe and to protect whatever I was building.

“Understanding where you’re coming from, knowing that if things go wrong, he’s a guy who I know will go and do what he has to do.

“You must [sic] Have someone you trust to make sure you don’t lose everything you’ve worked so hard for.

“Colby is not that guy. Colby is not a guy looking to deal with street things. He can talk like that.

“When he says he’s the king of Miami, he’s talking about the best fighter in Miami and it’s hard to say that right now given Usman’s training in Colorado.”
