Simmons returns to training with the 76ersCoach Doc Rivers tried to play Ben Simmons’ return to the Philadelphia 76ers cool, by simply presenting the petulant point guard to the team in practice with a joke the coach would use on any other returning player. ‘a prolonged absence. But this is no ordinary return.
Simmons trained on Sunday and faced his teammates for the first time since his trade claim. No decision has been made on Simmons’ status for Wednesday’s season opener in New Orleans.
“When he’s ready he’ll play,” Rivers said.
The real test could come in the 76ers’ home opener on Friday against Brooklyn, in front of 20,000 spirited fans eager to boo him out of the building.
Simmons, who averaged 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.7 assists over four seasons with the Sixers, has been a holdout following his offseason commercial demand. The three-time All-Star goaltender was not on the field when practice was open to media on Sunday, and the Sixers have said the goalie is due to speak at some point this week. (PA)
