Don King: I am a promoter of the people, by the people and for the people

Don King is back to promote a heavyweight championship fight and on yesterday’s media zoom call he was snappy as a tack. The ninety-year-old promoter held court and reminded everyone why he had been in the business for so long and been involved in the biggest fights in the sport. He was there to promote his card and what he did was filled with a few sound bites. Check out the release below for quotes from Don King and the fighters involved in the main event.

DON KING: International Boxing Hall of Fame Promoter

On staging this event at WD Packard Hall in Warren, Ohio:

“It’s going to be a great night of boxing. There will be six title fights and two world titles. We’re going to put some fun back into boxing. It goes to super, spectacular greatness. We are going to have fun again and not be ruined by Covid.

On Trevor Bryan vs. Jonathan Guidry:

“It will be a great fight because you have two undefeated fighters coming together. This gives fans the opportunity to get momentary relief from all Covid threats.

About Guidry:

“That’s the beauty of boxing. None of these guys have tasted defeat. Give people what they want. People are my most important asset. We want to give back to people. »

On Bryan being rusty after not fighting for a year:

“The WBA more or less held us hostage, not intentionally, but according to the rules they have. It locked up Trevor for an entire year. If Guidry wins, he will be ready to go from the start.

Don King held the live zoom from his office.

On hosting this event on January 29 in Warren, Ohio:

“I am a promoter of the people, by the people and for the people. The magic lies in the bonds of my people. I promote people.

Have WD Packard Hall as host:

“We wanted to go back to basics. Warren isn’t too far from training camps where you had Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Larry Holmes. It’s great to come home.

When it will slow down:

“I’ll slow down when I get to heaven. The gangsters blew up my car, my house. I’m fighting a twisted system where women can’t get their rights and equality, and black people don’t have a chance. This that’s why I’ve been fighting since I got out of the penitentiary.

“Ali came and brought five or six guys to Cleveland, Ohio to get me into boxing. I was doing numbers in Cleveland.

“I’m a cat with nine lives. I’ve been challenged nine times and I’m still here.

“We are all children of God. He has a reason I’m here. We want to establish a program to help all these homeless people here. They have lost their minds. There is nothing wrong with them. They have lost hope in America. We want to preach elevation.

By being associated with Bryan and his unique attributes:

“Bryan has the spirit of a winner. He has unwavering dedication. The dream will come true. Everyone can see that he cares about people and his family. That’s what comes from hard work and commitment. That’s what he really wants. He’s in the right place at the right time.”

On his 2022 plans for Bryan:

“He (Bryan) is ready to fight anyone. We’ll take anyone. We can take them all on the same night. We want to be able to demonstrate and illustrate that a champion is a champion. We want Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder. I fight to give people what they want. We have a champion here. It shows the public that Bryan is a champion. It feels good to be back where I am. started in Ohio. We’re going to be home and safe.

Back in Ohio:

“I never really left. My physical being was left to the great state of Florida and Nevada. Harry Reid and I (the late senator from Nevada) came from humble beginnings and worked hard for the good of the American people. It will be good to come home. That’s where the memories came from. You never forget where you come from. »

TREVOR BRYAN: WBC World Heavyweight Champion

Over a year since his last fight, and if he has more to lose than Guidry:

“It’s been a tough year for everyone, especially everyone in boxing. We were diligent, we stayed in the gym, we worked hard. We’re going to show the world why I’m the champion on January 29. I have a great opponent in front of me. I will do what champions do.

Trevor Bryan is currently the regular WBA heavyweight champion.

On Guidry’s preparation:

“We don’t really worry about what our opponents are doing. We care about what the Dream Team does best. I intend to capitalize on this.

On what he needs to do to get fights against opponents like Tyson Fury:

“After this fight, everyone is going to be screaming my name. I am not worried about this. Boxers know who Trevor Bryan is. I am here to stay. I am here to fight the best. I’m the best. I am the champion.”

On deciding to go with Don King as promoter:

“When I first signed with Don King, he showed me all the champions he had created. I told him that day that I will be a champion myself, so you can add me to that list, and here I am now. I’m building my own legacy. We keep winning again, looking good. I can’t wait for those blockbuster fights coming soon.

On British heavyweight boxer Daniel DuBois wanting to fight Bryan in 2022:

“I’m the champion. I’m a fighter. I love to fight. Every time I sign my name on the dotted line, I’m ready to go. Everybody’s supposed to pick me up. Everybody’s supposed to say my name Trevor Bryan is a true champion, and we want to see him out there with the best.

On the revival of the heavyweight division and the pressure it feels sensational on Jan. 29:

“There is no pressure at all. I am also the heavyweight champion. Trevor Bryan is here to stay. I am here to defend this title with the best. I will be sensational.

On the fight against Jonathan Guidry in 2011:

“Are you telling me that I’ve already fought Jonathan Guidry?” Going from my amateur career to my professional career, it’s a whole new platform. I’m here now. I am the champion now. I’m ready to fight anyone, especially if I’ve fought them before. I would fight them again just to show that I am the man. I am the truth. The Dream is the dream. I’m here to stay, and I’m here to show that this legacy starts here. It starts to show with these big fights. It’s a duet for the second time. I come to show this.

On the importance of his level of training and conditioning for this fight:

“It’s cold in Ohio, but we’re going to turn up the heat on January 29. I hope I can get this man out soon. I don’t get paid for overtime.

JONATHAN GUIDRY: Heavyweight ranked 13th WBA undefeated

On Trevor Bryan:

“Trevor is pretty good. He has a good jab, but I don’t think he’s an elite heavyweight. We have a better shot against him.

If any of Bryan’s previous opponents stand out:

“It takes a long time to get in the ring, so I know he (Bryan) is ready. He hasn’t had a very big fight against a top heavyweight, but neither have I. That’s a good test for both of us to see who deserves it.

Jonathan Guidry is looking to win some version of the heavyweight title.

On fighting Bryan in 2011 as an amateur:

“We fought at the Golden Gloves Nationals in Indiana. He’s a big guy and he has a really good jab.

To be a different fighter since he fought Bryan in the amateurs.

“We’ve had a lot more fights now. I was a little smaller then. Now I’m at 250. I’m a lot smarter, a lot faster on my feet, and a lot stronger.

To be the underdog:

“No one has had the world title since [Houma] Louisiana where I come from. It’s a great opportunity for me to really show my talent and that I can really fight. I am really strong. I don’t think it will go far, but we have prepared for it in case it does.

What to expect from Bryan’s fight:

“I don’t think anyone will make it past the seventh or eighth round.”

Against someone who is undefeated:

“I’m the underdog, so they might overlook me. He (Bryan) might neglect me, which I hope. We will shock him.

On the differences between fighting as an MMA fighter and boxing:

“I’m not too into MMA. I did it once. I prefer boxing to MMA. Boxing is more of a mental game. MMA is luckier. You have to set up this, that. Boxing is more mental than physical for me.

Being on a card promoted by Boxing Hall of Famer Don King:

“Not many people can say they fought on a Don King card. I’m glad he gave me the opportunity to fight for the world title. As Don says, he likes to give people the chance. ‘opportunity to show their talent. Without this opportunity, I would still be on a shrimp boat.

On the fight for the WBA heavyweight crown and his thoughts on Guidry:

“We just appreciate the opportunity. We saw Guidry’s talent, boxing IQ, power, the whole package. We are delighted to have this opportunity.
