“He sent his minions to try to get her back” | UFC’s Aljamain Sterling recalls when Mayweather tried to take his girlfriend away
Aljamain Sterling is still in good shape after bouncing back from neck surgery to retain his bantamweight title. However, in 2015, when Sterling was still undefeated and moving up the bantamweight ranks, he attended UFC 187 to support teammate Chris Weidman.
At the time, Weidman was a then-undefeated middleweight champion, and he extended his winning streak with a first-round TKO win over former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort.
Sterling went to a pool party with then-girlfriend and now fiancée Rebecca Cruz at the Palms Hotel & Casino at the time and met Las Vegas boxing legend Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. .
“He sent his minions to try and get her back,” Sterling said on the “Spinning Back Fist” podcast. “It’s like 2016, I think. It was definitely after Weidman fought Vitor Belfort but I was still undefeated at the time. So he sent a girl. No, I think he had to first sent a guy. He was like, ‘Yeah, we can both come down.’ Dude, I’m not that stupid.
“Like we’re coming, you’re gonna try to take it off and push me away, and then I’m gonna be like, ‘Nah, I gotta create a scene,’ because you’re not gonna punk me like that,” issued the Sterling’s hypothesis.
Aljamain Sterling is one of the most polarizing champions in UFC history. He won his title due to a fourth-round disqualification blow from Petr Yan on March 6, 2021 at UFC 259. However, he redeemed his abilities by defeating Yan again by split decision at UFC 273.
Still, many don’t want to see Sterling as a legitimate champion. Sterling’s championship tenure has been particularly toxic between racial undertones and his ongoing status as an underdog. However, his confidence never fails, and even back when he was considered a UFC prodigy, he was ready for any challenge, even from the TBE category.
“He left and came back with a girl, and the girl said, ‘Yeah, no, really, he said you two could come. And I was like, ‘Look, I know how this scene is going, this movie. You can tell Floyd he’s undefeated in boxing and I’m undefeated in MMA. If he wants to find out what the best sport is, we can find out today,” Sterling said.
The UFC champion now has a massive target on his back in mixed martial arts. Ever since he defeated Yan in a five-round fight, the win has sparked challengers who want to test themselves against him.
The return of the gnashing of teeth
Former two-time UFC champion Henry Cejudo first inserted himself into the conversation.

“I’m coming back for those tins of tomatoes and I’ll right the wrong!” Aljolame you number one contender B-tch,” Cejudo tweeted.
His manager posted a photo of Cejudo and UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby and executive Hunter Campbell, indicating that conversations are heating up for his return. Cejudo retired in 2020 after defending the bantamweight championship against Dominick Cruz at UFC 249.
The good news for Sterling IS if he’s not afraid of Mayweather, he’ll definitely accept a challenge from Cejudo.
