Islam Makhachev confirms he will fight Charles Oliveira in Brazil
UFC star Islam Makhachev has confirmed he would be interested in fighting Charles Oliveira in his home country of Brazil.
Although some fans and pundits may disagree, it certainly seems like Islam Makhachev is the obvious choice when it comes to deciding who will face Charles Oliveira for the UFC lightweight championship. ‘Do Bronx’ isn’t the current champion after being stripped of the belt for lack of weight, but his emphatic win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 underscored just how far ahead of his peers he appears to be.
The number one contender is waiting for the UFC to call and let him know when he will be competing for the title, with some speculating that could be later this year when the UFC returns to Abu Dhabi.
If that happens, the smart money would be for Makhachev to be the man standing in front of him – although it should be noted that UFC President Dana White wants to see him overtake Beneil Dariush before that. .
Since UFC 274, we’ve seen Makhachev take to the paint job on social media in an attempt to piss off Oliveira. Now, in response to a fan of the former champion, Islam has bluntly stated that he would be open to entering the 32-year-old’s home country to fight.
“We can fight in the middle of Paraiba bro, just make sure your boy Charles shows up”
Has Makhachev won his shot?
With a 10-fight winning streak and a 22-1 professional mixed martial arts record to his name, you sure can’t say Makhachev hasn’t done some real transplant to get where he is. However, in equal measure, we can also understand the logic behind someone saying he hasn’t faced many top lightweights yet.
He was able to dispatch Dan Hooker quite effectively last year, but he did it on short notice, with his follow-up fight against Bobby Green feeling like a step back.
If he could get a fight with Rafael dos Anjos or Beneil Dariush and get the win, White just couldn’t deny it anymore.
