“It’s like I’m in my prime right now”

Gina Mazany is eager to fight Priscila Cachoeira at UFC 262. “Danger” said she believed she was in her prime right now.

In a conversation with John Hyon Ko of Sportskeeda MMA, UFC female flyweight fighter Gina Mazany opened up about several topics ahead of her all-important fight at UFC 262.

Gina Mazany talks about being in her prime and ready to emerge victorious from UFC 262:

Gina Mazany has gone 1-1 since returning to the UFC in mid-2020, during her second stint with the organization. After suffering a loss in his first UFC fight in June 2020, Mazany went from bantamweight to flyweight. The 32-year-old put on a spectacular performance in her flyweight debut, beating Rachael Ostovich via third-round TKO in November 2020.

Known for her aggressive and entertaining fighting style, Gina Mazany has recently garnered praise for the improvements she has made to her general MMA arsenal, as evidenced by her incredible victory over Ostovich.

Gina Mazany has spoken to Sportskeeda MMA about her upcoming fight. Among other things, she approached lightly the sacrifices that fighters make to effectively manage their weight before their fights.

As indicated, Gina Mazany has already competed at bantamweight, and she has notably lost a few pounds since she switched to flyweight. Mazany has revealed that she enjoys food and cooking. Regardless, since she needs to stay close to her combat weight, she limits the amount of food she consumes.

Speaking about the sacrifices an individual makes as a fighter, Gina Mazany also noted that she has often considered retiring from the sport of MMA. Mazany added, however, that she absolutely adores the sport. This love, in turn, motivates her to overcome any challenges and pursue her career as a professional fighter.

Regarding her most recent fight, Gina Mazany stressed that she feels a strength advantage over Rachael Ostovich, especially in the teardowns. Mazany has indicated that she is likely to have a strength advantage over most of the other fighters in the flyweight division, especially since she has faced much bigger fighters for most of her career.

Gina Mazany also gave Ostovich props, referring to the latter’s recent signing with the sound organization BKFC. Mazany noted that she was happy for UFC veterans Rachael Ostovich and Paige VanZant, who now compete under the BKFC banner.

Ostovich and VanZant are likely to be booked for top spots on BKFC fight cards and to win a hefty sum in the promotion. While Gina Mazany is happy for her fellow fighters, she made it clear that she is unlikely to get into the sport of boxing with her bare hands.

Gina Mazany believes she is facing issues with hand injuries despite wearing MMA gloves. She added that hand-to-hand boxing would further magnify these hand injury issues.

Additionally, Gina Mazany opened up about her stint at Glory MMA last year and training under the tutelage of renowned MMA coach James Krause, who is a talented UFC fighter himself. Mazany noted that her time at Glory MMA in Missouri has been amazing, the people are nice and although the weather tends to be a bit odd, she loves the abundance of trees in the area.

Gina Mazany also congratulated her Glory MMA teammates, including male flyweight fighter Jeff Molina who recently made his UFC debut at UFC 261 on April 24, 2021.

When asked if Priscila Cachoeira was the first fight offered to her or if there were other fights planned as well, Gina Mazany said –

“You know, I asked for fights. But really, I kind of leave it all in the hands of my coaches and managers. Like, I just don’t, you know, at first when I got in with James (UFC fighter and Mazany coach James Krause) I wrote a list of girls that I wanted to fight. And it was funny because Rachael (Ostovich) wasn’t even on my list. I didn’t even think about it. And then he said, “What about this girl?” And I was like, “What do you think of Rachael?” I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s a good question. “

Gina Mazany defeated Rachael Ostovich via TKO in the UFC third round on ESPN: Smith vs Clark (November 2020). Mazany continued, “And then they offered Priscila, and James said, ‘I would have chosen this fight for you.’ And so I’m like, “Okay, I trust everything you say.” But yes, to my knowledge, I never said no to a fight. But yes, I literally leave it all in the hands of my managers and coaches. My job is to fight. They make all the decisions.

Additionally, Gina Mazany was asked what she thought of the game against Priscila Cachoeira and what her coaches told her about it. Mazany responded by saying –

“You know, they say, obviously they say, ‘It’s a good game for you.’ And looking at her, I think she’s very, like, heavy footed. Like, she throws bombs. I’m sure she hits hard. She’s probably really strong. But I feel like my movement has gotten really good. My head movements and, just like, my overall hitting, improved. And like, with that, I still have my wrestling and my stuff and my ground game. And I just think I’m a bit of a better all-around, well-rounded fighter. And I think I can really set a rhythm. As I receive, I am really tired in the fights, but I am not; I don’t really stop. I sort of continue. Like, I don’t; I’m good to tire myself out and keep going.

“And I’ve seen some of her previous fights, and she has a tendency to do gas. And I know she works. I’m sure she’s working really hard. And I hope she is because if she puts on a good show, that means I’m going to put on a great show. Let’s make money. But I think it’s a good game for me. I think she will come out strong in the first round, and I think she could be; I might face some adversity in the first round. But I think the 501 rolls when it came after the first bell, like, that’s my fight. I think I might face a bit of adversity at first. But from there, like, I’m gonna go.

‘Danger’ reiterated that his general MMA skills have improved significantly since moving to Glory MMA. Gina Mazany praised her coaches, including James Krause. Mazany also noted that there aren’t many female fighters in the gym, but she is content with the few female fighters available every now and then.

Gina Mazany was asked how she views her UFC 262 fight against Priscila Cachoeira, in response to what Mazany said:

“You know, it is; I don’t know how I’m going to win. You know, like, my last fight, I didn’t think in a million years I was going to win by a liver blow. It’s something that I throw in all the time, and something that I let people down with, but I just don’t know. I just don’t know, but one thing is I’m going to find a way to win. Whether it’s on the pitch, whether it’s standing, whether it’s against the cage, I’m going to find a way to win. I think I just worked too hard and have too many skills not to find a way to win. So I think it will be a good fight. I really do. I think she is going to give me a nice tough look but nothing that I have never seen before, in the sense of size or strength – because I have fought really tall girls before. So I’m really excited to see how I feel against another 125 pounds.

Additionally, Gina Mazany was asked if she feels she is making her way as a fighter and athlete. Mazany responded by saying –

“I think so, you know. I feel like I’m in the best shape of my scary life, and I’m 32. I never thought, like, I found abs that I had never seen before. I didn’t even know I had the best abs. I thought I was like, ‘Oh, I’m just genetically weird. I don’t have those abs. But I do, so in the offseason I go for a walk and still have abs. So it’s like I think I’m in better shape overall. It’s like I feel like I’m in the prime of my life right now, which I never thought I’d be in my 30s, but damn, I’m gonna work on it.
