Jared Cannonier gives exclusive insight into O’Malley’s gym habits

Jared Cannonier recently trained with bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley and shared the experience.

A commonly cited principle in mixed martial arts has always been that iron sharpens iron, and the fact that Cannonier and O’Malley train together is a prime example of this. They both worked out of the MMA Lab in Phoenix, AZ, with the recent middleweight title challenger preparing for a fight with Sean Strickland, and Suga’ Sean preparing to face former bantamweight champion Petr Yan.

Jared Cannonier praises Sean O’Malley

With this type of training environment, Jared Cannonier has had the chance to see firsthand the type of athlete that Sean O’Malley is, even when he’s not in front of the cameras. Turns out “The Killa Gorilla” is actually quite impressed with what he saw.

Speaking in an interview with The Schmo, Cannonier explained that he was blown away by O’Malley’s dedication to really studying all the fighters in his division, not just Yan. Additionally, he said the flashy style that Suga’ Sean is known for is something he actually practices, not just something done on the spur of the moment.

“Suga’ puts in the work, man,” Cannonier said. “Suga is a master of his craft, that’s for sure. He’s dissected those fighters, the bantamweights, the ebb and flow of the game. He’s always ahead of him, if not neck and neck with him. Suga is the man. He’s always improving his game, inside and outside the Octagon. There’s a lot of different examples coming out of him, watching him.

“Not to mention that his style is very entertaining to watch and also effective,” Cannonier added. “When I watch him land and do his moves and stuff, it’s not just stuff he gets out of his ass. He works, and he practices these things, and he’s wired to do them. It’s great fun to watch him, and when he goes there and Abu Dhabi and shines on the big stage, it will be well deserved, and I’m just going to have fun.

It’s praise from Jared Cannonier to Sean O’Malley. Time will tell if the thrilling bantamweight lives up to the hype bestowed upon him, but regardless, it’s clear that he genuinely puts his mind to everything he does with the sport.
