Kansas Representative Davids contracts COVID-19 despite vaccination | New policies

TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) – Kansas representative Sharice Davids tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday despite having been vaccinated against it and being isolated.

Davids said in a statement that she had only had mild symptoms from her breakthrough case. She said she was tested after undergoing outpatient surgery involving the parathyroid glands in the neck which regulate calcium levels in the blood.

The two-term Democratic MP for the Kansas City part of the state said she was following precautions recommended by health officials, including wearing masks indoors. She said she was grateful for the COVID-19 vaccines and urged people to get vaccinated.

“I know things could have been a lot worse for me without it,” she said in her statement. “We need everyone to get vaccinated in order to put the worst of this virus behind us. “

Davids’ statement did not say exactly how she became infected with COVID-19, or whether she has the delta variant. A recent analysis has shown that revolutionary cases of COVID-19, with mild or no symptoms, are still rare.

The Kansas congressman’s announcement came after Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and GOP Representative Ralph Norman from South Carolina tested positive.

Dozens of members of Congress have been infected, including GOP Representative Jake LaTurner, who represents a district in eastern Kansas.

Norman is part of a federal lawsuit against United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for a term earlier this year that saw members wear masks while on the floor of the House. The mask requirement was lifted on June 11 but has since been reinstated due to a resurgence of the coronavirus.

Davids won the Kansas seat in the 3rd Congressional District in 2018 by toppling four-term Republican Representative Kevin Yoder in a heavily suburban district that turned against former President Donald Trump. She received national attention because she is an LGBTQ Native American who has previously fought mixed martial arts fights. She is the only Democrat in the state congressional delegation.
