Kenya: Boston Marathon Champion Chebet Wins LG Sports Personality for April

Nairobi – Evans Chebet is the LG Sports Personality of the Month for April 2022 from the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK).

The Kapsabet-based athlete achieved the feat after winning his first-ever major marathon title, the prestigious Boston Marathon.

Chebet claimed victory in a time of 2 hours, 6 minutes and 51 seconds and had his campaign effectively stitched together when Boston’s strong field of athletes failed to match his finishing touch.

And he did it with bravery as he took fellow countrymen Lawrence Cherono and defending champion Benson Kipruto to the glittering podium.

The 33-year-old received a Vivace washing machine, featuring AI DD technology, from LG East Africa Managing Director Sa Nyoung Kim at Riadha House on Wednesday.

“I am so thrilled to win my first ever award, it motivates me greatly to reach my goal or run the Berlin and New York marathon. I thank LG and SJAK for the kind gesture of remembering athletes, we are grateful “, says a delighted Chebet.

“It felt such a good feeling to go to Boston and win, especially after failing to finish in 2018,” he added.

LG East Africa Managing Director, Sa Nyung Kim encouraged Kenyan sportspeople to continue to be the country’s brand ambassadors.

“So to all the sportsmen and women in and out of this place, there’s a brighter side waiting for you to show yourself, find your limits and dare to push beyond them,” Kim said.

“As LG Electronics East Africa, we are committed to being there to support you through SJAK and ensure you break down barriers and lift the trophy.”

“Our sponsorship of this award is not only meant to inspire our sportspeople to continue to do better, but it also signifies our commitment to contribute to the development of sports in Kenya by recognizing local talent,” added the LG Managing Director.

Chebet beat a strong group of athletes nominated for the April prize, including Boston women’s marathon winner Peres Jepchirchir, rally star Karan Patel who won round three of the 2022 FIA African Rally Championship ( Equator Rally) from start to finish.

Also on the list is Maurine Chepkemoi, who broke the course record at the 75th edition of the Enschede Marathon in the Netherlands.

The five gold medalists from Kenya’s Hit Squad team at the Zone 3 African Boxing Championship in Congo were also nominated for the April award.

They were light welterweight Teresia Wanjiru, welterweight Everlyne Akinyi, light heavyweight Elizabeth Andiego, flyweight David Karanja and bantamweight Shaffi Bakari Hassan.

SJAK President Chris Mbaisi thanked LG for their continued support, saying the partnership has gone a long way in rewarding excellence.

“For 8 years, LG has demonstrated its support for sport, both on and off the field. And together, we share the ambition to create opportunities at all levels and ensure that every budding athlete benefits from a conducive environment.”

“We look forward to further developing our relationship over the coming years.”
