Michael Bisping launches female title ‘BMF’ for Nunes / Shevchenko trilogy
Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping has suggested Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko should fight for the women’s version of the ‘BMF’ title.
Shevchenko, the current UFC flyweight champion, was in action last weekend at UFC 266. In the main pay-per-view co-event, “Bullet” made her sixth defense of title, placing her at the top of the list for UFC Champions in triumphant retention.
The dominant 125-pound queen passed Lauren Murphy at the event. After three rather lackluster rounds of action, which largely saw “Lucky” unable to mount an attack, Shevchenko turned up the pressure and let his guns go. With brutal elbows and punches, the Kyrgyz star finished Murphy in the fourth quarter.
After another dominant display, the momentum behind calls for a trilogy fight with featherweight and bantamweight champion Nunes picked up. Given that she dismissed challenges from Jessica Eye, Liz Carmouche, Katlyn Chookagian, Jennifer Maia, and Jéssica Andrade, many have suggested that the next logical challenge for Shevchenko is a third attempt to defeat the “lioness.”
In a recent episode of his Believe me podcast, Bisping showed his support for a trilogy fight between Nunes and Shevchenko. However, he made a few changes from their first two clashes, including the creation of a women’s “BMF” belt.
“I’m saying they’re having a third rematch, but Shevchenko doesn’t have to go up to 135 for the belt. Fuck that. Meet in the middle, it’s the two best ladies on the planet, 130 pounds, Shevchenko rides five [pounds], Nunes goes down five to meet at 130 not to fight for the title… they make a female BMF version of the belt. Who really is the worst motherfucker in terms of women on the planet? 130 lb catch weight. Boom. That’s what they should be doing and that makes it right. (h / t Sportskeeda)
The original title “BMF” was created for Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz’s fight at UFC 244. After an impressive display, “Gamebred” won the ceremonial belt and was often seen wearing it at UFC events since.
Shevchenko and Nunes first fought at UFC 196 in 2016. The Brazilian raised her hand after winning a comfortable unanimous decision. “Bullet” offered a lot more in their rematch a year and a half later. In the main event of UFC 215, Shevchenko nearly dethroned the 135-pound champion, and even after the scorecards sentenced her to a split-decision loss, the Bishkek-born star revealed her dismay at the to the position taken by the judges on the fight. Given his performances and reign on the flyweight title since the rematch, many have suggested that now is the time to have the Big Two face off again.
Having said that she is ready for the trilogy ahead of UFC 266, it stands to reason that another dominant win would only have made Shevchenko more confident about a potential third meeting in the Octagon with the other champion. destructive of female alignment. If Nunes were to emerge victorious against Julianna Peña at UFC 269 in December, we might well see these two legends collide again.
