Israel Adesanya (20-1) returns for his third middleweight title defense, but he’s just lost for the first time in his MMA career. After playing 20 flawless fights, he accepted a great fight with the light heavyweight champion. He was the favorite, but Jan Blachowicz proved it takes more than skill to hang on to the big boys and he put all his weight and experience to good use, subduing Adesanya and walking away with a unanimous decision.

Marvin Vettori (17-4-1) finally gets the rematch he has been asking for since 2018, when they fought for a split decision. He thought he had been robbed but he has done everything well since in the cage and has a five-streak impressive win in a row. He rebounded with two consecutive unanimous decisions against Cezar Ferreira and Andrew Sanchez before submitting Karl Roberson. He followed that up with two more unanimous decisions over Jack Hermansson and Kevin Holland to win the only fight he’s interested in.

Their first fight was close, but Adesanya was more delusional and landed the best strikes over the three rounds. He landed 57 important strikes against 46 for Vettori, attacking the calf and body with kicks and whips through the guard.

Vettori pulled off a few decent punches with his chin keeping him in the fight. He also made two of his six takedown attempts and we can expect him to shoot more this time around.

When Vettori managed to bring down Adesanya, he was able to control him but didn’t deal enough damage before Adesanya got back to his feet. We can see Vettori committing more of his takedowns, especially after seeing Blachowicz throw him.

Vettori is clearly a good striker, but he can’t trust his chin. Adesanya’s range, technique and precision will be too important over five laps and he has only improved since accumulating invaluable championship experience. Vettori has also improved a lot since the inclusion of his combat IQ, so we would expect him to trade with Adesanya but jump on a takedown at any opportunity.

There is no doubt that Adesanya will have worked on his withdrawal defense and reassemblies after the Blachowicz fight. They were already decent, but Blachowicz just had too much weight and power. Vettori is not at Blachowicz’s level, but he has an advantage in weight and power. The question will be: can the Italian keep Adesanya on his back.

We expect him to be eliminated, but he won’t be able to keep Adesanya long enough to win three rounds. While they’re on their feet, we expect Adesanya to be even more confident with the full range and data recorded since their first fight. He knows what weapons Vettori has and he’ll be ready to take advantage of his six-inch arm and three-and-a-half legs again.

It will always be a close fight with Vettori taking control of the fight for parts of the fight and if he delivers a better career performance and wrestles for five rounds he has a chance. However, Adesanya’s piercing kicks to the calf and upper knee will stack up. Once Vettori’s movement begins to slow, expect Adesanya to increase the output by firing body kicks, head shots, and long punches in the dome. He will end up stronger, but Vettori’s granite chin will likely force him to make a decision.
