MMA: Zamboanga 100% ready for ONE Grand Prix Atomweight
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino atomic weights star Denice Zamboanga has said she is ready for what is expected to be the biggest test of her young mixed martial arts career so far.
Zamboanga, 24, is one of eight women who will compete in the highly anticipated ONE Atomweight World Grand Prix. The tournament winner will take a chance against reigning ONE atomic weight champion Angela Lee later this year, according to ONE Championship president and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
The first round of the tournament begins at ONE: EMPOWER, which broadcasts live on May 28 from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.
Zamboanga, who is the No. 1 in the division, faces veteran Seo Hee Ham. With the stakes high, Zamboanga is determined to defeat Ham and win the tournament.
âI prepared myself hard for this fight. A lot of pain, sweat, tears and blood went into this training camp. I am in the best shape of my career. Physically, mentally and spiritually, I am ready for this fight. I am ready to give 100% and do whatever it takes to win, âZamboanga said.
The young Filipina burst onto the scene in December 2019 when she beat Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan of Malaysia. Zamboanga then defeated former ONE title challenger Mei Yamaguchi in 2020, a massive upheaval that landed him first in the divisional standings.
She followed that victory a few months later, impressively submitting Watsyapinya Kaewkhong in the first round.
But Zamboanga will arguably enter the Grand Prix as the underdog against Seo, who is seen as the most dangerous candidate on the pitch.
The Filipina, however, remains confident in her preparations and has promised to take the fight directly to her Korean counterpart.
“I know she’s the toughest opponent in my career so far. For that reason I’m not going to be easy with her. I’m going to make sure I’m the toughest opponent I have. she has never faced in her career, also “sworn Zamboanga.
To prepare for the fight, Zamboanga embarked on a 12-week training camp at Marrok Force, where she trains with her older brother, her compatriot ONE Championship, Drex Zamboanga.
âMy team at Marrok Force has been a huge instrument in my development as a martial artist. They have helped me improve in every area imaginable. I can say with confidence that they have created a complete martial artist in me. More than anything, they continue to motivate me every day to be the best Denice Zamboanga I can be, âshe said.
Other matches in the first round of the ONE Women’s World Atomic Weight Grand Prix included a battle between No. 2 ranked candidate Meng Bo and Brazilian newcomer Julie “Juju” Mezabarba, a showdown between Stamp Fairtex, ranked No. # 4 and Alyona, ranked # 3 Rassohyna and Itsuki “Android 18” Hirata vs. Alyse “Lil Savage” Anderson.
In the ONE: EMPOWER main event, Xiong Jing Nan, reigning ONE female strawweight world champion “The Panda”, defends her world title against second strawweight champion Michelle Nicolini.
In the co-main event, six-time world kickboxing and Muay Thai champion Anissa “C18” Meksen makes her ONE Super Series debut against Martine “The Italian Queen” Michieletto.
