Opening Gym of an MMA Fighter in Port Colborne
A former clothing store in downtown Port Colborne is a perfect fit for Anthony Romero as the site of his new fitness studio.
At 13 Clarence Street, west of the lift bridge between King and West Streets, the one-story storefront had changing rooms, remnants of its former life, as well as a washroom and shower.
It was also a good fit for its budget in uncertain times for businesses that cater to indoor customers, fitness studios and gyms in particular.
” I have just begun. I don’t want to invest a lot of money in something when, who knows, we might have another wave of COVID shutting things down again, âthe professional mixed martial arts fighter said.
Romero, whose professional record is 9-1, originally wanted to locate the gym in Welland, but found it difficult to find a “good location.”
âNow that things are opening up again it’s starting to get a little more expensive,â he said in an interview at his home in Welland.
Genius Fitness and MMA – the name pays homage to the 24-year-old fighter’s cerebral approach – opens on Monday. He currently has 50 clients, many from Port Colborne and area.
âSome just go for lessons, others do private lessons,â he said.
Romero doesn’t expect parking to be a problem. He pointed out that the sessions are mainly offered on weeknights and weekends.
âEven though the limit is two hours, sessions usually last one hour,â he said.
The gym will appeal to women as well as men, and almost all ages.
âFive-year-olds at the age you want to be,â he said with a laugh.
Besides Romero, who has been teaching for over 10 years and is a black belt in several disciplines, instructors include his younger brother Simon, whose areas of expertise are Brazilian jiu-jitsu as well as boxing, and Samantha Romano, who has wrestled for Canada. during competitions in Romania and Brazil.
Romero graduated from Brock University with a recreation and recreation degree after graduating from Notre Dame College in Welland.
He is scheduled to face Nico Echeverry, 30, 11-4, on Sunday, November 21 in Houston, Texas. Romero is hoping to bounce back from a loss in a split decision to JJ Okanovich on September 5, also in Houston.
Romero opened his professional career with nine straight wins, including five by unanimous decision, after compiling an 8-1 record as an amateur.
