Pros react to Nate Diaz’s submission to Tony Ferguson

Find out how other UFC fighters reacted when Nate Diaz won what could be his last fight in the Octagon, beating Tony Ferguson

After a crazy road to UFC 279 with lots of shaking, and expectations that a fight with Khamzat Chimaev wouldn’t go his way, Nate Diaz can end his UFC run by coming out on top, submitting Tony Ferguson in the main event of the evening. .

The fight started slowly, although the two men had their fair share of relationships. Diaz landed the best shots and had leg control that caused a nasty gash on Ferguson’s shin. Ferguson, however, landed some notable kicks in the opening frame.

Ferguson seemed to get off to a better start in round two and continued to pound Diaz’s legs with leg kicks. But Diaz continued to land upstairs and caused a cut near Ferguson’s left eye.

Diaz looked frustrated with Ferguson backing off and spinning, as Diaz broke off his action and refused to commit repeatedly in round three. The slashes on Ferguson continued to bleed blood in the third, but his movement helped earn a bit of an early lead.

The war ended in the fourth round, with Diaz pressuring Ferguson before Ferguson attempted a takedown. Diaz, however, grabbed Ferguson and guillotined him, scoring the submission.

Heading into tonight, Diaz, who was in the last fight of his UFC contract, competed at UFC 263, dropping a five-round decision to current UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards.

Diaz also competed twice in 2019, beating Anthony Pettis before a loss to Jorge Masvidal, but he hadn’t been consistently active since his pair of fights with Conor McGregor in 2016.

After his victory, Diaz hinted that he could “take up another sport”.

Ferguson at one point had a 12-fight winning streak, including a victory over Kevin Lee at UFC 216 to capture the interim UFC lightweight championship. Things haven’t been the same for him, however, entering this fight on a four-fight losing streak that has seen him lose to Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Beneil Dariush and Michael Chandler.
