When the New Year arrives, fitness is often on our minds. New research from a sports nutrition brand, Myprotein, ranked this year’s trends to try, and also reflected on trends that lost momentum in 2021.

In 2022, according to new research from Myprotein, we can expect increasing interest in functional fitness, social exercise, and intuitive eating ideas; and the growing interest in fitness styles like boxing, mixed martial arts, ultimate frisbee, among others.

Functional fitness, social exercise, and intuitive eating are some of the fitness ideas likely to generate interest in 2022, according to new research from Myprotein.

The brand has teamed up with personal trainer Tom Hall to make some predictions on what fitness trends we might see in 2022. Here’s what Tom had to say:

1. Financial year

“People love to see people – interaction is so precious, even if we don’t always think it is! While people may enjoy being part of a gym with all the equipment they could possibly need, they also like to chat and be social, as well as having other people around to motivate them.

“So if all goes, we expect a return to activities in person, as well as in a group, and maybe a little dust is settling on those dumbbells at home!” “

2. Cross-training and functional fitness

“The world is less and less oriented towards traditional strength training and most coaches are now making more functional training plans. Working out in functional fitness can also help achieve a number of different goals, whether you’re looking to build muscle, lose weight, or just maintain a good level of strength and fitness.

3. Data-driven training plans

In addition to looking to the future, Myprotein also took a look at the past 12 months, using Google search data to highlight the most and least popular fitness trends in the United States.

In a sometimes frustrating year, Americans have turned to a variety of combat sports in an attempt to stay in shape – and release some tension while they’re at it! Boxing came out on top, with a whopping 139% increase in searches. Mixed martial arts saw 102% search volume, with kickboxing (+ 48%) and karate (+ 29%) also getting a boost.

After the postponed matches finally took place, 2021 saw an increase in Olympic-inspired workouts, including badminton (+ 70%), athletics (+ 47%), rowing (+ 43%), swimming (+ 33%) and tennis (+ 13%). And thanks to the viral trend TikTok, we also saw a spike in interest in the hula hoop, with searches increasing by 70%.

Along with the most popular trends, the research has also highlighted the workouts that Americans have fallen in love with.

Unsurprisingly, as we started to venture outside this year, interest in home training has dropped 45%.

Research has also found a decrease in interest in a range of different exercises that are commonly done at home, those that require minimal equipment and limited space.
