Team Rage rakes the medals

Team Rage Kickboxing Club fighters recently won gold and silver medals at the Great North 2 tournament in Potchefstroom.

It was one of three major tournaments held throughout the year. If a fighter competes in all three, they can be selected for the Gauteng team and ultimately the South African team.

The five fighters who excelled in the semi and low kick category at Potchefstroom are Linzy Henning, 13, who won two gold medals, Reinhardt Labuschagne, 17, who also won two gold medals, Estiaan, 21 year. Labuschagne who won two silver medals, PJ Brits, 30, who won a silver, and Kaiwyn Labuschagne, 15, who didn’t win a medal but did well considering it was the first time in three years that he competed.

All fighters are now preparing for the next Far North tournament.

The 30-year-old PJ who has been with the club for four years won his MMA fight at the Gladiator Championship Fighting tournament on June 24 at the Carousel. He fought against Krishan Gubgaroo in the amateur light heavyweight division and won with a guillotine choke. Although he loves MMA fights, kickboxing helps him with the basics.

PJ wants to make a name for himself in MMA and hopefully transition from amateur to professional and later compete in the UFC. He and Estiaan will both be competing in the Grassroots 4 MMA event on September 24 at Northlands Corner in Northriding.
