Pacquiao and Casimero in Los Angeles.

The next four weeks will be very crucial for Filipino boxing, both in the professional and amateur ranks, as Manny Pacquiao and Johnriel Casimero feature in all the important fights for the world title as the country’s boxing team contend for the podium at the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The country’s boxing trip begins the last week of July and early August as the four-person Philippine Olympic boxing team consisting of middleweight Eumir Felix Marcial and flyweight Carlo Paalam in men and flyweight Irish Magno and featherweight Nesthy Petecio for women. to move the eliminations to the hoped-for medal rounds.

Our boxers aim not only to end the country’s nearly two-decade medal drought in the event, but to surpass Anthony Villanueva’s silver medal at the 1964 Olympics held in the same Japanese capital duplicated in 1992 by Mansueto Onyok Velasco in Atlanta.

Our greatest hope for much cherished boxing gold rests on the broad and muscular shoulders of Marcial, the best player of the Asia-Oceania qualifiers and the silver medalist of the 2019 World Amateur Boxing Championship in Russia. Marcial is envisioned by Ian Wainwright of Ring Magazine to fight for gold in the middleweight division against Ukrainian Oleksander Khrysniak and World Championship hangman Gleb Bakhsi of Russia.

Petecio, the surprise winner of the 2019 Featherweight Women’s Amateur Boxing World Championship, also features at least in the medal rounds.

On August 14, 2021 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif., Casimero makes the second defense of his WBO bantamweight world championship as he takes on dangerous Cuban defensive maestro Guillermo ‘El Chacal’ Rigondeaux, the former undefeated world super bantamweight champion who now holds a secondary belt at bantamweight with the WBA.

It will be a very crucial fight for Casimero especially as it will be an important step towards his dream of being the only true unified world bantamweight champion.

However, official odds makers in the United States set him up as the underdog ahead of the fight against Rigondeux whose only professional career loss so far was three divisions higher at super featherweight or 130 lbs in an attempt. of title missed against the undefeated world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko of Ukraine.

Casimero is hoping to prove the oddsmakers wrong by securing another compelling victory that would bring him closer to future showdowns with Naoya Inoue and / or Nonito Donaire, Jr. for overall dominance in the 118-pound class.

Finally, a week later, on August 21, 2021, Manny Pacquiao hopes to continue his already legendary pro boxing career by capturing the unified WBC-IBF global welterweight belts from defending American champion Errol Spence in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao had previously won the WBO division title three times, once against Miguel Cotto in 2009, Tim Bradley in 2013 and Jessie Vargas in 2016 and last won the WBA super belt in 2019 against former unbeaten Keith Thurman. .

Like Casimero however, Pacquiao is also the pre-fight odds against the underdog against Spence, with a $ 100 bet in his favor winning $ 130 in return.

If he beats Spence, he will win the WBC and IBF belts, making him the first welterweight fighter since Floyd Mayweather, Jr in 2015 to win all the major belts in the division, but not simultaneously and as an undisputed unified champion. . More than that, a win will certainly further enrich his legacy and place him firmly in the debate over the greatest fighter of all time.

Filipino boxing fans would be on the edge of their seats so to speak for the next four weeks.

Let’s all hope and pray for the best.
