UFC Vegas 40 preview: Aspen Ladd
Tomorrow in the main event of UFC Vegas 40, we’re going to see a rare headliner in the women’s featherweight division. One of the brightest prospects in the promotion Aspen Ladd (9-1) returns as she faces off Norma Dumont (6-1).
Ladd was supposed to fight last weekend at 135 pounds. However, she failed to gain weight and the fight was eventually called off. When Holly Holm fell from this weekend’s main event, the UFC called Ladd and asked if she would take that headlining spot at 145 pounds.
Without hesitation, Ladd accepted the opportunity. This will be Ladd’s first fight in just under two years. The last time we saw her was in 2019 when she arrested Yana Kunitskaya. Ladd is one of the best prospects in the UFC bantamweight division, but she has always had weight issues.
Fighting at 145 pounds should be refreshing for the young star. Standing in front of her tomorrow will be Norma Dumont. Dumont is 2-1 since joining the UFC and her only loss came to Megan Anderson in her promotional debut.
Since that loss, she has racked up two consecutive wins. Her last victory came against former title challenger Felicia Spencer by split decision. If Dumont is able to defeat Ladd tomorrow, she might have an argument as a deserving challenger in the UFC’s shallow featherweight division.
UFC Vegas 40 Prediction
This main event at UFC Vegas 40 is going to come down to eliminations. It’s no secret what Aspen Ladd’s game plan will be tomorrow night. Ladd will try to reduce the distance in order to bring Dumont to the mat.
If she is able to do it, she can easily finish this fight. Ladd has some of the nastier terrains and beats all the fighters on the list, male or female. If she catches you, she’ll throw everything at you, including the kitchen sink.
That said, if she can’t get him to the ground, she could have a rough night. I really like the strike, especially at a distance from Dumont in this match. If she can defend the eliminations, I can easily see her separate Ladd from the outside.
I keep going back and forth over my prediction for this game at UFC Vegas 40. In a vacuum, if both fighters were at their best and trained for it, I would pick Aspen Ladd. However, given the short-term nature and weight reduction of the past week, I love Dumont by decision.
Prediction: Norma Dumont via unanimous decision
